The first step to maintaining a beautiful garden is to buy the right kind of turf. There are various issues to consider when buying turf – the kind of garden you have, how much time you’re willing to dedicate to your turf, and where you’re based in the country.
If you’re looking to buy turf from a supplier listed on TurfPages™ it’s important to first read our Guide to using TurfPages™. This contains a full and comprehensive list of each of our categories, as well as a full explanation of our regional listing system.
The first thing to consider is the type of turf you require. Is the turf for a large decorative area, or is the turf for a small family lawn? Is it better for the turf to be decorative, or hard-wearing? Remember that a decorative lawn will take longer to care for, although a more hard-wearing turf will not necessarily be as lush and vibrant.
You need to think about how you need the turf when choosing a company. Are you able to lay the turf yourself, or will you require a company that provides a laying service? Does the company offer any quality guarantees?
Local weather conditions will also make a difference – are you in an area inclined to drought, or to flood? Not all turf types are suitable for all gardens. Once you’ve found a company that’s suitable for your general purposes, it can sometimes be best to take a few minutes to speak to the company in question with your specific needs to see if they can help you.
Finally, think realistically about how much turf you really need. Most turf companies will require that you first measure you garden for an idea of how much turf is required, and getting a little bit extra is never a bad idea, in case of any mistakes!
If you are unsure then this handy turf calculator will help you. It covers all sorts of strange shapes including ellipses and triangles.
